187、Know, Recognize

一、Know as a Verb. Its meaning is "to be familiar with, to understand, to recognize, to identify, to know about." The word is often modified by other words or phrases to determine its exact meaning. It is a continuous verb. For example:

"Do you know me?" (Do you recognize me?)

"I have known him ever since I was a child." (I have been familiar with him since I was a child.)

"He doesn't know the neighbourhood, the streets are unfamiliar." (He is not familiar with the neighborhood, the streets are strange to him.)

二、Recognize as a transitive verb. Its meaning is "to identify, to recognize, to acknowledge, (in diplomacy) to承认". It refers to re-identifying someone or something. For example:

"He could scarcely recognize his old friend." (He couldn't even recognize his old friend.)

"He glanced at the envelope and recognized his uncle's hand-writing." (He looked at the envelope and recognized his uncle's handwriting.)

"We are among the first countries to recognize the new government." (We are among the first countries to acknowledge the new government.)
